My January Playlist: Summer in Winter Edition

Is it summer yet? I'll even settle for spring right about now. I've been getting through the winter doldrums with a playlist of summeresque tracks that are all about sun and fun. It's time again to treat your ears to my custom monthly mixtape, so join me! Download the playlist HERE.

And as always, a description of what's going on here:

1. Bright Lit Blue Skies - Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti (off the record Before Today)
Your classic throwback summer song. The record slipped under my radar last year, but I've been listening to it a ton lately.

2. Come On Sister - Belle & Sebastian (off the record Write About Love)
Belle & Sebastian prove they still have it with this track off their great full-length from last year. Been spinning this disc a lot lately too.

3. Where's Summer B.? - Ben Folds Five (off the self-titled record)
What a fresh track, it just came out fifteen years ago! Seriously though, Ben Folds' piano stylings are classic, and this track specifically channels that summer feel (with a title like that, I hope it would!).

4. Savage Night at the Opera - Destroyer (off the record Kaputt)
The solo project of the New Pornographer's Dan Bejar, Destroyer's 2011 release does not disappoint. In fact, I've been pretty obsessed with it lately. This track illustrates his style well, with those recognizable vocals and drum machine/synthesizer accompaniment.

5. Heartbreaker - Girls (off the EP Broken Dreams Club)
There's probably no other band out there right now that could be as accurately described in a word as "summer" than Girls. Their Californian surf sound is infectious, and while their instrumentation has expanded on this EP, it's still very recognizably summery. Best of all, this EP was put out free, so go grab it off the net!

6. Home Together - White Denim (off the record Last Day of Summer)
I got this record yesterday, and I've been listening to it nonstop since. The sound these guys are putting together, with things like tempo changes and saxophone breakdowns, is unlike anything else out there right now. The craziest part about it is that it was a sort of side project for the band between work on their "real" next record. As such, it was actually put out on the internet for free too, so just do yourself the favour and go download it.

7. Monkeys Uptown - Iron & Wine (off the record Kiss Each Other Clean)
I was pretty excited for the new Iron & Wine album because of how it was being billed as having a mid-'70s AM radio sound, and while I wouldn't agree completely with that description upon hearing it, it is still quite enjoyable. This track is one of my favourites off it.

8. Hard Times - John Legend & The Roots (off the record Wake Up!)
I really liked the Roots' LP from last year, and I had been meaning to get around to listening to this collaboration between them and John Legend for a while. It's good stuff! This cover of the classic Baby Huey track is a classy way to open the record.
