My Obsession of the Moment

As I hastened through the chilly moonlit campus this evening after class (thanks to daylight savings, it's officially pitch black outside when I head home), my thoughts drifted from those of Personality Theory to something more gratifying. In actuality, to say my thoughts "drifted" isn't quite accurate. No, ever since Saturday when I embarked on this new adventure, the machinery of my mind has been dominated in one form or another by it. The schema of the person known as John has fundamentally shifted, and where there was once resolute calmness in my mind, now there dances unrelenting thoughts of tactical skirmishes and square grids that cover all terrain.

I'm talking about Final Fantasy Tactics, people.

How many readers did I just lose? Yes, I'm blogging about a video game. But it's not lame! Alright, I guess it is about as nerdy a game as they come, but it's addicting as hell. I downloaded it on my Playstation a few days ago, and I've become pretty taken by it! Which isn't great, considering it's a busy time of year school-wise...

Final Fantasy Tactics is a spin-off of the omnipresent Final Fantasy series, but it differs from the rest in considerable ways. You oversee tactical skirmishes of small groups of warriors that play out in a turn-based fashion. The game's extremely customizable (almost overwhelmingly so; I spent an hour just looking at tutorial stuff the other day to understand what the hell is going on), from weapons and equipment, to the type of job and skills your characters have. Not to mention it has an intriguing (if a little overcomplicated) story! Also, it takes place in Ivalice, the same setting as my other favourite Final Fantasy game, FFXII; but let's not delve into that, we're on a time budget here.

I never had a Playstation in the day because I had a Nintendo 64 (a decision that I do not regret), but there are a ton of classics that are worth going back to. If you have never tried Final Fantasy Tactics, I'd highly recommend it! If you have a PS3 or a PSP, it's available on the PSN store for a cool ten bones.

I'm sure you haven't heard the last of Final Fantasy Tactics from me yet, but that's it for now.

PS: I am listening to the new Kid Cudi record. Three word review: hella tight son!
